What’s that in the sky? We’re venturing out to find out in Planetary Pioneers—one of 10 epic adventure weeks! This week is all about exploring the far-flung reaches of space. Our astronauts-in-training will embark on out-of-this-world science experiments, cosmic art creations, and mind-bending team challenges. Prepare for a space-tacular adventure that’s out of this world!
What Are Adventure Weeks?
Adventure Weeks are week-long, themed summer camp programs designed to engage campers in exciting, hands-on experiences. Each week offers a unique theme, encouraging kids to explore new interests, tackle challenges, and develop new skills in a fun and supportive environment.
Adventure Week Activities
Each Adventure Week is packed with tons of activities for kids to explore. From specialized outdoor adventures and games to crafts and stories. Here are some activities campers will do this summer:
Gravity Falls
Campers will step into the role of engineers as they use the Engineering Design Process to explore gravity and air resistance. They’ll design and test their very own drag devices to slow down falling objects. From brainstorming to testing, this hands-on experiment will help them understand how engineering principles can shape the way things move!
Constellation Project
Look to the stars! In this stellar activity, campers will create a simple pinhole constellation projector using a paper cup. After exploring famous shapes in the night sky, they’ll design their own constellation patterns and tell the story that inspired them—connecting art and astronomy in the most creative way!
Let it Glow
Get ready for a glowing adventure into the mysteries of space! Campers will experiment with phosphorescent slime, exploring the science of light absorption and luminescent materials—just like the eerie glow of distant planets and cosmic phenomena. By testing different light sources, they’ll discover what makes the slime shine brightest and uncover the secrets of bioluminescence. We'll also explore how life adapts to the deepest, darkest places on Earth and imagine the extraordinary creatures that might survive on alien worlds. It’s glowing, it’s gooey, and it’s out-of-this-world fun!
In this Adventure Week, campers will:
- Explore Engineering and Problem-Solving: Through activities like designing drag devices to slow falling objects, campers will engage in hands-on engineering challenges, practicing the engineering design process and learning how to approach problems with creativity and critical thinking.
- Learn Scientific Principles: From gravity and air resistance to light absorption, campers will explore fundamental scientific concepts, gaining a deeper understanding of how the world works through fun, interactive experiments.
- Develop Creative Thinking: Whether designing constellations or creating glowing slime, campers will apply their creativity to combine science with art, encouraging imaginative thinking and innovative problem-solving.
